In France, 47% of the population suffers from overweight and 17% from obesity and, according to WHO forecasts, we are heading towards 30% by 2030.

For appropriate support
However, even though it brings in its wake numerous health problems (19 associated pathologies: diabetes, increased risk of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, Covid-19, etc.) obesity is not considered as a full-blown disease. And people who suffer from it do not benefit from consistent and appropriate care.

Anti-obese discrimination
In their work “I did not choose to be fat”, Anne-Sophie Joly and Richard Zarzavatdjian shed light on the disease (genetic causes, weight of heredity, treatment limits, marker of social inequalities …), but also they detail the main areas where anti-obese discrimination manifests itself: in the school environment via harassment, professional life, medical care and in representations (fashion, TV, etc.).

Change the way we look at it
This book includes a reflection made moving by the testimonies of six personalities (Marianne James, Magloire, Valérie Damidot, Danielle Moreau, Sonia Dubois and Laurent Ournac) as well as anonymous people on their own journey and relationship with their obesity. Ultimate demonstration that it is high time to change the way we look at it and consider it with more empathy and kindness.
